What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

Pelvic health PT is a specialized branch of physiotherapy that focuses on assessing, diagnosing, and treating conditions related to the pelvic floor muscles and associated structures. These highly trained pelvic floor physiotherapists use a holistic approach to address a range of issues including pelvic organ prolapse.

What is Pelvic Organ Prolapse?

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the muscles and tissues supporting the pelvic organs become weakened or stretched, causing one or more organs—such as the uterus, bladder, or rectum—to descend into or protrude from the vaginal canal. This can lead to discomfort, pain, and difficulty with everyday activities such as walking, lifting, or even sitting. Types of pelvic organ prolapse include uterine prolapse (when the uterus descends), cystocele (when the bladder bulges into the front wall of the vagina), and rectocele (when the rectum bulges into the back wall of the vagina), all of which can cause additional symptoms and complications.

Several factors can contribute to pelvic organ prolapse, including:

Childbirth

Multiple births or large babies, can weaken the pelvic floor muscles.

Aging

Changes in hormones impact the ligaments and connective tissues that support the pelvic organs and also impact the pelvic floor muscles.

Chronic Pressure

Activities or conditions that increase intra-abdominal pressure, such as heavy lifting, and chronic coughing, can weaken the pelvic floor.

Surgical History

Previous pelvic surgeries can also contribute to pelvic organ prolapse.

Meet January, Your Pelvic Health Physiotherapist

January Muhlbeier Physiotherapist

Hello! I have been working as a Physiotherapist in Calgary for the last decade and I have been treating pelvic health concerns for half of that. I treat everyone with a pelvis using a holistic model. Regardless of whether you have female or male anatomy, if you have pelvic floor concerns, I can help! I am passionate about supporting and empowering you to feel strong, capable, adaptable, and resilient in whatever it is you want or need to do, whether that’s having a happy and healthy sex life or being able to laugh with your kids without peeing a little. Rest assured, too much information is not a thing that exists for me. If it’s important to you, I want to know. I look forward to being a part of your health journey!

Our Treatment Approach

At Maximum Potential Physiotherapy, we are dedicated to providing a supportive and empowering environment for every patient. Here’s what you can expect when you come to us for pelvic organ prolapse treatment.

Comprehensive Assessment

Your journey begins with a detailed assessment. Our physiotherapists will take the time to listen to your symptoms, medical history, and concerns. We’ll perform a thorough physical exam, including an external and internal assessment of your pelvic floor muscles, to understand the severity of your prolapse and its impact on your daily life.

Personalized Treatment Plan

Based on the findings of your assessment, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique situation. This plan may include a combination of pelvic floor exercises, manual therapy, and lifestyle modifications.

Ongoing Support and Treatment

Pelvic health is a journey, and we’ll be with you every step of the way. Regular treatment sessions will be scheduled to help monitor your progress and ensure that your treatment plan is effective. We’ll adjust your exercises and techniques as needed to ensure you’re seeing improvements in both strength and symptom relief.

Home Exercise Program

To maximize the benefits of your treatment, we’ll provide you with a customized home exercise program. These exercises are designed to be simple yet effective, helping you maintain your progress between appointments. Consistent practice at home is essential to achieving long-term success in managing pelvic organ prolapse.

Empowerment Through Education

Our goal is not only to treat your symptoms but also to empower you with the tools and knowledge you need to manage pelvic organ prolapse in the long run. We’ll teach you about proper body mechanics, posture, and strategies to prevent further weakening of your pelvic floor. You’ll leave each session with a deeper understanding of your condition and the confidence to take control of your health.
